Dinner in Dresden, Saturday, July 7...Italian in Germany

I went to dinner tonight in an area of Dresden which reminded me of the East Village in NYC. I was excited for a great German meal. Well...I could not find a German restaurant in this area....none! I swear!!! I found Mexican, Sushi, American, Chinese, Italian and even African, but NO German.

I decided to have Italian. Why..not too sure...I just left Italy but I decided on Italian food.

I sat outside and enjoyed the nice weather. I actually spoke Italian to the German/Italian server. I think my Italian shocked him...maybe because it's not so good or maybe because no one speaks Italian in Germany.

I ordered my favorite...Fruiti (forgot how to spell it) de Mar...spaghetti with a variety of seafood. When the server brought me my meal, I noticed that it was only spaghetti and the legs of calamari. Gross. I didn't see one shrimp, one mussel or clam...nothing! It was only the gross scary leg things. UGH!

I told the server IN ITALIAN that I love Fruiti de Mar but I was a little disappointed. He responded to me in Italian and said that he would have the chef make a new one and that he would also be disappointed. He didn't like it either. In the meantime, he brought me a glass of presecco. Yikes, my 3rd glass of wine already and no dinner yet.

My new meal came and it was delicious as was the tiramisu and 3 glasses of wine. Time to "roll and stumble home"!

When I left, the Chef came out and asked me in Italian..why was I there alone and how did I know Italian??? He was also surprised. I told him about Marisa's wedding, my travels, and my language school in Grado. He smiled and said it was great. I really don't think he understood me though because I know that I did not say it all correctly in Italian. I tried though and he pretended to understand.

I took a taxi back to the hotel and we ended up driving around for a while because I tried to tell my taxi driver the name of my hotel and she didn't understand me, because she only spoke German...of course.

I didn't follow my own lesson...always bring a card from the hotel with you....all taxi drivers can read cards from the hotels.

Overall...it was a nice night. Speaking Italian in Germany, getting lost with a very nice German taxi driver and having a delicious Italian meal in Germany.

Night! Marisa and I are off to Prague tomorrow. I hope she had a good time at the wedding tonight. Off to bed for me...I'm a bit tipsy and I don't know if I should be speaking Italian, German or English. They're all pretty bad right now!

What a delightful story. Only you could pull that one off. I felt like I was there.
